About
How it's made
I make all of my pottery in my home studio near Detroit, Michigan. Each piece is handmade in small batches and are one of a kind. I use cone 6 porcelain & white stoneware, which are both silky smooth and pure white clay. The natural vibrancy of porcelain and white stoneware greatly enhances the color of the glazes. My pottery is fired twice in my Skutt kiln first bisque to 1900 degrees Fahrenheit and then glazed fired to 2300 degrees Fahrenheit and slow cooled for dramatic glaze effects. Any decals or gold luster detail requires a third firing at 1300 degrees. After the glaze firing each piece taken out of the kiln and is inspected. The bottoms are sanded with specialty diamond sandpaper to ensure smooth bottoms that are comfortable and soft to the touch.
My journey
I started making pottery in high school over 15 years ago. My love of the arts only grew from there. I graduated with an art degree from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, MI. After finishing my degree life ended up taking me in a different direction. I ended up working in health care for 5 years working with seniors. My love for pottery never faded and I ended up taking wheel throwing classes at night just to use their equipment. Taking classes again and being surrounded by amazing artist inspired me to become a potter. In 2019, with the help of my amazing family, I set up my own home studio and began to create. In 2020 I left my full time 9-5 job to care for my daughter and make pottery full-time, and life hasn't been the same since. Everyday is a new and exciting adventure.
Why the name MoonMoon?
Our daughter, Elara, is named after one of the many moons of Jupiter.
MoonMoon Ceramics is named after my amazing daughter because she is the center of my universe and my own little moon moon. I chose this name as a way honor her and represent my deep love of the moon.
